There are two new options for hit counts, one of which will be useful for giving love to more neglected stories!

  • If you go to the Yuletide 'works' page (or those for either subcollection), you can now sort by hits, so that you can see which stories have the fewest hits. This is similar to the old archive's option for showing those with few to no comments, so that you can make sure that stories without as much attention get a little more.

  • And for those who prefer to not see hit counts, there's now an option in "My Preferences" for:
Don't show me any hit counts.
This should turn off all visible hit counts for you anywhere on the archive, on your stories and on those of others.

Just a head's up, don't expect the author reveal on the stroke of midnight! As usual, it will probably happen sometime tomorrow. One of us is off gallivanting, and one of us is a little under the weather, so basically, it will happen when it happens!

Unrelated note: If you locked your story to be archive only, so that only those with AO3 accounts can read them, it's possible that your recipient is unable to read or comment on your story, if they defaulted early and didn't already have an account. If you don't have an AO3 account, you can sign up for one here.

With revision 2050 of the archive, a couple of much-requested changes, along with some bug fixes.

Highlights:

  • Limitations removed from the 'works' page for collections. You may now see all works saved to a collection.

This means that the Yuletide 'works' page shows all 3880 stories, while the Yuletide 2009 'works' page and the Yuletide Madness 2009 'works' page show 2736 works and 644 works, respectively.

NOTE: Browsing via this route is a heavier load on the server than going via the fandoms page: if you find things are moving slowly, you may find it helps to go in via the 'fandoms' pages.

  • 'OR' option added to filters - you may now select (for example) multiple fandoms to filter on

So that on those 'works' pages, you can choose and retrieve multiple fandoms using the right-hand filters.

Also note, the most excellent and hard-working tag wranglers did some interim tag wrangling to ensure all Yuletide fandoms show up on the fandoms page. People may have noticed one or two inconsistencies in the way things are handled which arises from this, but things will be tidied up soon!

If you encounter anything odd, please let AO3 know via the Support and Feedback form.

Frequently Asked Questions about the AO3, Yuletide, and the Searching Thereof

Grey Bard, with the help of #yuletide, collected some questions about the archive and searching and asked if answers could be posted. Most of these questions are the type that should be directed to AO3 support, and should eventually end up in the Archive FAQs, but may not be there yet. I agreed to collect some answers and post them here in the interests of happier Yuletiders. :) Thanks to those who helped provide the questions!

Key:
NYR = New Year's Resolution Challenge
YT 2009 = Yuletide 2009
YTM 2009 = Yuletide Madness 2009

Yuletide is the primary collection you will see on the AO3 collections page. Within Yuletide you currently see YT 2009 and YTM 2009, and eventually you will see NYR 2010, and the sub-collections for all previous years of YT and NYR.

You can also keep up with AO3-specific news on the AO3 news page, where the most recent update is about Yuletide's move to the AO3!

Should I comment on fics I read right now, or is it too stressful for the servers?

Comment away, if you haven't been! And please, if you haven't commented on the stories you received, please do so, even if it's just to say 'thank you for writing this for me". Consider how you feel/would feel, if you hadn't heard from your recipient. Even if you defaulted, we still ask you to at least comment on the story you received; you don't have to have an AO3 account to do so.

Can I use the search box on the upper right of the AO3 to search within a collection/sub-collection? )

How do I find a listing for all the fandoms in YT 2009/YTM 2009? )

When I click on "works", it returns a max of 1000 stories. Is there any way to retrieve all the stories? )

If I use filters on the "works" page, are the stories that came up just from within those original 1000 results, or all the stories in the collection? )

I clicked on multiple fandoms/pairings/characters/tags on the filter list, and got '0' results. What happened? )

When I click on "works" in the Yuletide 2009 sub-collection I get a list of fandoms, but some of them show 0 stories when I click on them. Does that mean that that fandom was eligible for Yuletide but no one wrote it? )

Is there a way to include filters in a search in the search text box? For example, Boolean search and google fu, + - quotation marks etc. )

Does the fandom filter contain the same information that the fandoms page does, or might things listed on one have fallen through the cracks on the other? )

When I bookmark or rec something, does a notification get sent to the author? )

When you make a private bookmark, the bookmark itself is invisible, but will the tags you use be visible/indexed/attached to anything else? )

I keep trying to enter a comment on one of my gift-fics, and the form keeps closing on me! What do I do? )

Are all of the stories now correctly categorized by fandom and accessible through tags and filters, or is there still tag-wrangling to be done? )

Will there be an announcement when the archive is eventually fully tag-wrangled? )

Is there any way that I as the author or reader can make the jobs of the tag-wranglers looking at this fic easier? )

What is the "people" button? )

there are some stories in Yuletide 2009 (YT 2009) that are under 1000 words, and some in Yuletide Madness 2009 (YTM 2009) that are 1000 words or over. What )

Is there any way to hide the hit counters on my stories? )

I used to do Thing X on the old archive! How can I do that on AO3? )
